What are Solar Panels?

In today's world, it's becoming ever more common and important to switch to alternate sources of energy, given the awareness around global warming.

Solar power is continuing to emerge as a fantastic source of energy, not just for households & residential properties, but for offices and commercial businesses too. Only last week we drove past the William Harvey hospital in Ashford and saw a huge amount of ground-mounted solar panels!

Solar panels are also often referred to as Solar PV panels - PV stands for "photovoltaic" - and they take light from the sun to convert it into electricity. The light from the sun consists of energy particles called "photons" which get converted into energy.

A solar panel itself is made up of lots of solar cells. When these solar cells are spread across a large area, they can then generate power. These cells are made of semi-conductive materials, for example silicon, and they have a negative and a positive layer which create an electric field.

Did you know?

Every hour, the sun beams enough solar energy onto Earth to keep everyone on our planet supplied with electricity for an entire year. Pretty incredible right!?

Volta Green Energy can help you harness the power of the sun for your home or workplace. Click here to enquire if you'd like to find out more.
